GOSSAGE, WILD ASPHALT CIRCUS MAKE SURPRISE VISITS TO TMS SEASON TICKET HOLDERS
FORT WORTH, Texas (August 30, 2012) - It is rare for the owner, president or players of a sports organization to make a surprise visit to the office or home of their most loyal fans, but that's exactly what Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage did Wednesday afternoon with three randomly selected season ticket holders.
Gossage and the "No Limits" Wild Asphalt Circus took to the road in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex to personally thank some season ticket holders for their continued loyalty and support. Joined by "Great American Sweetheart" Katie dressed in a ringmaster's outfit and armed with a duffel bag of Wild Asphalt Circus-branded merchandise, Gossage visited with some of the fans that are the backbone of the speedway.
"The best part of my job is hanging with the fans," Gossage said. "I spend a lot of time with them at the races, but it was very cool to surprise them at the home or place of business, listen to their stories about coming to the speedway and racing, and having a few laughs. Everyone knows our sport has the most passionate fans and I could certainly see that in the ones we visited. They are Texas Motor Speedway."
The most unique story of the three visits was the final stop in The Colony, where Gossage visited with grandmother Hazel Pierce. She has been a season ticket holder since 1997, has never missed a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the speedway and has turned racing into a family affair. She initially had three season tickets so she could take her son, Joe, and daughter-in-law, Debra, to the races. Along came two grandchildren, Brandon (now 16) and Bailey (now 12), and she bought season tickets for them as well and they were attending races as infants. It has become Grandma Pierce's annual Christmas and birthday presents to the family and she says, "that's all they really want is tickets to go to the races." All five are Tony Stewart fans.
Gossage also had some fun with the grandchildren as he helped them try on some of the Wild Asphalt Circus items that were in the duffel bag like the clown shoes, wig, nose and rainbow hair.
"NASCAR is such a family sport and all of us just love going out to TMS together," Hazel Pierce said. "We've always had a great relationship with TMS. They are fan friendly and always take care of their fans above all else. You walk into great seating - it's a beautiful coliseum, a great race track with great amenities and they take good care of us. We appreciate everything they do for us."
Gossage's first stop came at Sabre Holdings in Southlake where he visited with Jennifer Garcia, who has been a season ticket holder in Section 113 since 2006. Another Stewart fan, Garcia had some fun when she pulled the clown wig out of the bag and asked Gossage, "Can I throw this at Matt Kenseth's car?"
"This says a lot (about Texas Motor Speedway)," Garcia said. "It shows how much they care about the fans big or small, no matter the ticket price. I wasn't expecting the whole group and Eddie to come. It was a pretty big surprise."
The other stop came at the American Heart Association offices in Dallas, where Gossage visited with Judy Wilks. She has been coming to Texas Motor Speedway since it opened in 1997 and became a season ticket holder in 2005. Wilks, a Jeff Gordon fan, came down the office stairs, spotted Gossage and was stunned that he personally came to visit her and thank her for her support.
"I was completely surprised. I had no idea this was going to happen," Wilks said. "This says they really care about the fans and the fans that have been there since the beginning."
